Signs & Symptoms
Recognising the warning signs early.
Common Signs of Alcohol Addiction
Alcohol addiction does not look exactly the same in everyone. Some people may experience several signs, while others may notice only a few. The presence of one sign does not necessarily mean someone has Alcohol Use Disorder, but a pattern of difficulty controlling alcohol use or continuing to drink despite problems is a reason to seek professional guidance.
Strong cravings for alcohol
Difficulty stopping or reducing drinking
Drinking more than intended
Spending significant time obtaining or recovering from alcohol
Neglecting responsibilities
Continuing despite health or relationship problems
Withdrawal symptoms after reducing or stopping alcohol
When Should You Ask for Help?
Consider speaking with a healthcare professional if you are concerned about your drinking, find it difficult to cut down, or notice that alcohol is affecting your health, work, finances, relationships or daily responsibilities. You do not need to wait until drinking becomes severe before seeking help. An early assessment can help you understand your drinking pattern and identify appropriate support. Important: If you drink heavily or regularly and may be physically dependent on alcohol, do not stop suddenly without medical advice. Withdrawal can sometimes become serious or life-threatening.
